Donetsk, Ukraine, 2005 : Photographs by Margaret Morton

Decaying industrial relics and mining towns, remnants of a collectivist past, continue to haunt the desolate steppe of this former Soviet republic, now an independent nation. The magnitude of these industrial structures is overwhelming. Treacherous and inefficient, many of the mines were closed in the mid-1990s, causing massive unemployment in the region.
